7th Nov - Journey's end
It is with much heartache I share with you that Pat died in the early hours of Saturday, 5th November. We have reached this journey's end far sooner than expected, yet with relief for Pat.
Pat was home two days from hospital, after having had surgery to bypass a bowel blockage. He was looking good and feeling stronger. However, in the evening he suffered an internal haemorrhage. He went to hospital where all they could do was to ease his immense pain. I was with Pat, and his son, Jamie, was on the phone, and we were able to give him comfort as he passed.
Although I am devastated by the suddenness of it, this end was better than the other one that we were facing. We had spoken to the Oncology doctor yesterday, and she cautioned us that by the time Pat had healed from the operation, he might not be able to have any chemo. So the cancer would have slowly eaten away at Pat and he would have hated that.
I am fortunate to have Jamie by my side to comfort me in my grief, as well as helping arrange things. I am also blessed with the support of my family, friends and neighbours, both near and far. I am humbled by the care and generosity of others.
It was Pat's wishes to be cremated. A memorial will be held here in his art studio, and another in Sydney, at his beloved Middle Harbour. Details still to come.
I ask you to hold Pat in your hearts, share your fond memories of him, and if you would like, to make a donation to PanCare, whom gave us considerable support, guidance and comfort this year.
I will need time to recover, and at some point, a new story will begin.
